Geikie Gorge video poem

In the far North of Western Australia, there lies a spectacular body of water called Geikie Gorge. If you are visiting the Kimberleys, then you simply must visit this spectacular spot. Relax on a cruise up the gorge, spot the crocs, or goggle at the marvellous colours of the towering cliffs that you glide past.

Aussie outback cartoon - Lake Argylle

If you visit Lake Argylle in North Western Australia, then the first thing that you'll notice is the sheer size of the place.
Just how big is it ? This is the question that tourists invariably ask. No wonder, when it stretches to the horizon as far as the eye can see.
It is actually eighteen times bigger than Sydney Harbour. That is quite immense, I'm sure you'll agree.
When I visited Lake Argylle, it was a typically hot WA day. The temperature hovered around 40 C and I was glad to get into the airconditioning of the visitor centre.
If you visit the Visitor Centre, you can sit down and cool off, and take in a very interesting documentary on how the Ord River scheme came about. You can see just how this huge lake was created.
Here's my poem about Lake Argylle. I felt it deserved an ode. I hope you like it.

Lake Argylle is incredibly grand,
An oasis in this vast brown land,
Tourists come to simply stare,
There's dam good photos everywhere ! "

Along the Gibb River Road in the Kimberleys

This photograph was taken by the author at the start of the Gibb River Road in North West Australia. From here, some 660km of dirt road will lead you through a variety of outback scenery.
What were my impressions after 'surviving' this stretch ? In my opinion, the winter months are the best time to go here - the heat is more bearable then and the road is dry and navigable. If you leave it too late - getting into October for instance, the wet season begins. The wet usually lasts November through March with swollen rivers, and treacherous mud.
So my advice would be to travel the Gibb River Road between May - August. As long as reasonable precautions are taken, the route is safe enough. Obviously a four-wheel drive vehicle is a sensible choice.
If you're carrying a suitcase in the back, make sure that everything is wrapped up in plastic. The infamous outback red dust gets into everything ! Once it's impregnated into clothing, it can be rather hard to remove.
